So how do you choose which chemicals to use? Always look for a SDS (Safety Data Sheet) for chemical information. Find the pH of the product on the sheet, or look at the list of ingredients and see if it contains what you need for your job.

• ACIDS (about 1-6 on the pH scale) – Used to remove heavy oxide, salts, metal particles, rust. Common acidic chemicals used in pressure washing: oxalic acid, citric acid, hydrofluoric acid.
• NEUTRALS (7 or very close to 7 on the pH scale) – Used to clean light oils, light dirt/soil particulates, small solid particles. Common neutral chemicals used in pressure washing: water, ethanolamine, SDBS (sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate).
• BASE/ALKALINE (about 8-14 on the pH scale) – Used to remove heavy oils, grease, fats, proteins, and heavy soil buildup. Common alkaline chemicals used in pressure washing:  bleach, ammonia, sodium hypochlorite, sodium hydroxide.

Tip: If you buy concentrated products, make sure to find the dilution rate so you can add the proper amount of water for effective cleaning!
